Project Title: Implementation of Automated Pavement Distress Rating Systems 16. Abstract This paper presents the image-processing algorithm customized for high-speed, real-time inspection of pavement cracking. In the algorithm, a pavement image is divided into grid cells of 8 x 8 pixels, and each cell is classified as a non-crack or crack cell using the grayscale information of the border pixels. Whether a crack cell can be regarded as a basic element (or seed) depends on its contrast to the neighboring cells. A number of crack seeds can be called a crack cluster if they fall on a linear string. A crack cluster corresponds to a dark strip in the original image that may or may not be a section of a real crack. Additional conditions to verify a crack cluster include the requirements in the contrast, width, and length of the strip. If verified crack clusters are oriented in similar directions, they will be joined to become one crack. Because many operations are performed on crack seeds rather than on the original image, crack detection can be executed simultaneously when the frame grabber is forming a new image, which permits a real-time, online pavement survey. The trial test results show good repeatability and accuracy when multiple surveys were conducted in different driving conditions.

Pavement distress image recognition using k-means and classification algorithms
Road pavement maintenance today relies mainly on manual pavement condition inspection and distress rating; however, this manual method is costly, labour-intensive, time-consuming, and dangerous to inspectors and may affect traffic flows. Moreover, such method is very subjective and may have a high degree of variability, being unable to provide meaningful information. Additionally, since using t...
متن کاملRut Resistant Asphalt Pavements
The three major distress conditions affecting the performance of asphalt pavements are permanent deformation or rutting, fatigue or load associated cracking, and low temperature or thermal cracking. In an earlier technical topics article (Fall, 1998), we examined the causes of fatigue cracking and the importance of good compaction during construction to help minimize this type of distress. In t...

With the advancement of 3D line laser imaging technology (“3D technology”, hereafter for the sake of brevity), high-resolution 3D transverse profile data (“3D data”, hereafter for the sake of brevity), has gained widespread interest from researchers, industry and highway agencies and has been used for collecting pavement surface distresses. However, the study of data characteristics, e.g. data ...

Finite element method in pavement analysis is a type of mechanistic analysis that has widely been used by road and transportation engineers these days. This method is used with related programs such as ABAQUS/CAE which is one of the powerful software on this task. Modeling in this software has been developed from 2D static models to 3D dynamic models which are closer to reality due to the more ...
متن کاملSensitivity Study of Design Input Parameters for Two Flexible Pavement Systems in Iowa Using the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavemen
Many agencies use the AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures to design their pavement systems. The limitation inherent in this method is the empirical nature of the decision process, which was derived from a road test conducted almost 45 years ago in Ottawa, Illinois. The newly released Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG), based on NCHRP Study 1-37A, has adopted a mechan...
